Litha, Summer Solstice, the height of the days of summer. Fire, the sun, rules this joyous time. The days are long, hot and filled with light.

In Australia, Litha coincides with Christmas celebrations. Family get-together, holidays in the sun. It is a time of eating and drinking too much, and sleeping it off during the heat of the afternoon.

The Goddess now, is both lover and mother. Pregnant again, with the young God. As the Earth, she is pregnant with the crops, the harvest to come. The God is strong, virile, powerful. He is at his peak, his power felt in the heat of the Sun and the long days. The days are now longer than the nights.

Together, their love is passionate, undying, blazing heat. Though they both carry the knowledge that soon the God must turn away, return to the underworld. Give his life for the changing seasons.

For me, I combine the Summer Solstice into Christmas celebrations. Personally, I celebrate the Sun, the Summer, the culmination of another secular year. It is nice to be able to celebrate such a bright and happy solstice with the sparkly trimmings of Christmas, spending time with family, Christmas feasts and exchanging presents. A really nice way to spend such a bright, happy and joyful Solstice.
